Hurricane Helene

September 26,  2024, and the early hours of the 27th, were frightful. As sleep and I lay wrestling with each other in Savannah, Georgia, rattled by hurricane-force wind gusts and rain assaulting my windowpanes, making things crack and splinter just outside, much too close to my head . . . I got a text alert. My nine-year-old grandnephew was crying out for help; the same monster storm was terrorizing him too–over 120 MILES AWAY near Augusta. Our exchange in the dark helped me as much as it helped him.
